Winter Driving Tips

Dec 29, 2022

Living in Wisconsin we have no choice but to drive in the winter snow and unpleasant weather. More than likely, you think, I do this every winter, I know what I am doing. But how often do you stop to really think about all the steps and precautions you can take to be sure you get where you are going safely.

Here are some tips, precautions and maintenance items to help you make it through the winter.

  1. Maintain a full take of gas – Helps minimize the amount of moisture in the tank, and will help keep you prepared should you be stuck in traffic or snow
  2. Care for your tires – Be sure you have enough tread depth and that your tire air pressure is at correct levels
  3. Accelerate slowly to prevent wheel spin – This will help you get through intersections safely
  4. Reduce speed and drive smoothly – Keeping your speed down gives you more time to react to slipper situations
  5. Allow longer breaking distances – Breaking sooner than you would in dry conditions gives you extra time and distance to come to a safe stop
  6. Be extra cautious of other motorists – Others may not drive as carefully as you, if you feel you are being pushed, pull over and let them go by

This is just a small list of all the things to consider when out driving in our wonderful Wisconsin winters. There are many other factors to consider.  Check out this article from Consumer Reports with Tips for Safe Winter Driving for more information.
