How to Properly Use Jumper Cables to Jump Start Your Car

You are in a hurry to get somewhere and you get in your car, turn the key (or push the start button) and your car won’t start. FRUSTRATING! We have ALL been there at some point. To get on the road fast, a quick option is to jump start your vehicle. Most of us carry jumper cables, and if not, hopefully the vehicle that is helping you will have jumper cables. Once you have the cables in hand, do you know the proper order of steps to jump start your car? It is one of those things maybe you have never done, or haven’t had to do in a long time. So, do you know what to do? Consumer Reports has an informative step by step article on jumpstarting a car.

Common Steps for Jump Starting Your Vehicle:

  • Park the car you will use for jump starting close enough to the vehicle with dead battery so that jumper cables will reach between vehicles
  • Turn off the ignition on both vehicles
  • First clamp one end of the positive cable to the dead battery’s positive terminal
  • Next connect the other end of that cable to the other battery’s positive terminal
  • Now connect one end of the negative cable to the good battery
  • Finally connect the other end of the negative cable to a ground on the dead battery
  • Start the car with the good battery
  • Now start the car with the dead battery
  • If it doesn’t start check connections and try again
  • If it does start, let it run for 20 minutes to allow battery to charge
  • Disconnect cables in reverse order from install
